HeyDonna is an AI transcript editor for digital court reporters and legal transcriptionists. It drafts, proofreads and formats a transcript in your template, tracks every edit, and leaves the review and certification to you.
Our story
I'm Rajiv. I've loved programming since my teens, and building apps is still what gives me a kick.
I left my job at Lucent to start my first company, Sedna Wireless. We were building ThinFone, a streaming hardware device. It didn't work. While winding it down in 2008, I took an internal tool we had built, a Skype call recorder, and with the last of the money turned it into CallGraph. I released it for free. It took off, and Lifehacker featured it.
I kept iterating and kept talking to users, and transcription turned out to be the thing people actually wanted. So I built Scribie, a transcription service run by freelancers around the world. For the next decade I worked relentlessly and wrote a lot of code, most of it as Scribie's only developer. We got into deep learning early and built our own speech-to-text pipeline, trained on our own data.
Then OpenAI released Whisper for free. It was trained on an order of magnitude more data, and it made our models irrelevant. Then came ChatGPT. The first time I watched it write code, I realized my job was gone.
So I set out to find out how good these models really are, and started HeyDonna. It is built entirely by AI agents: six full-stack developers, managed by one PM and directed by one CTO. The agents run the entire app development workflow: talking to beta users, triaging issues, design, development, QA, release, deployment and DevOps. Basically, it's an entire engineering team. I haven't written a single line of it by hand, and I've barely reviewed any. I chat with the PM and the CTO and tell them what to build.
Together we've built a full-featured transcript editor for digital court reporters and legal transcriptionists. It takes a deposition recording, a job sheet and a template, and produces a fully formatted, court-ready DOCX. Scribie's transcribers use it regularly, and it has doubled the productivity of some of them.
